St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church will welcome Rev. Ildefonce Mapara, OSB, from St. Pius X Catholic Church in Klamath Falls, Oregon the weekend of June 13-14 as he coordinates a mission appeal for St. Maurus Hanga Abbey. Hanga Abbey is a vibrant Benedictine community in Southern Tanzania. Founded in 1957 by the late Fr. Ebehard Spiess, OSB, Hanga Abbey was created to allow the Tanzanian population to live in the spirit of St. Benedict. Over fifty years later, the original mission of the Abbey lives on as the Hanga community continues to grow and promote Benedictine values while remaining rooted in African culture.
Like all other Benedictine monasteries, the Abbey’s motto is “Ora et Labora,” literally meaning “Pray and Work.” As a part of their missionary work for the Catholic Church, they engage themselves in social development and humanitarian services, from the local village to the world at large. Hanga Abbey provides many services to the surrounding village including medical treatment through the monastery dispensary, daily transportation to the regional capital of Songea through the monastery's bus company - Amani Express, a clean water project pumping water to the village from twelve kilometers away, and education through the two secondary schools, one primary school, and one trade school that the monastery operates. Please consider a generous donation to St. Maurus Hanga Abbey as we listen to Fr. Mapara’s message during the mission appeal. Thank you!
