In spite of growing up in the predominantly Catholic city of New Orleans and going to a Catholic school, I had very little exposure to the Knights of Columbus. I knew very little about the organization or what it did. That started to change when my family moved to Austin from Champaign, IL in 2016.
My wife of 32 years, Mary, has always been an avid and regular volunteer. Me, not so much. I traveled a lot for work, often on short notice, so scheduling regular volunteer activities was nearly impossible. I hated signing up to do something only to cancel at the last minute. So, I just stopped signing up for anything.
I haven’t been a Knight for very long, but I joined a few years ago mainly for the volunteer opportunities. By chance, I noticed a poster for Mobile Loaves and Fishes in the vestibule of St. Catherine’s. They were resuming operations after the COVID lockdown, and needed people on weekends. I wasn’t traveling as much during the pandemic, so I signed up to help out one Saturday. It was there that I met some Knights from St. Catherine’s who told me more about the Knights of Columbus and what it does. They told me that there were no fixed work requirements. I could do as much or as little as my time allowed.
That’s ultimately why I joined the Knights of Columbus. It offers plenty of volunteer opportunities that I can do alongside a great group of guys. Now that I’m retired, I hope to do a lot more around the Parish.
